Explore our history

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade and its ribbon of parkland were dedicated in 1950, with care of the garden falling under the domain of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. In 2009, the Brooklyn Heights Association and the DPR formed a Public-Private Partnership to ensure a dedicated professional gardener to restore and maintain the Promenade Garden.

That first year saw the initiation of a major restoration effort of the garden, the planting over 10,000 bulbs and the formation of an active corps of more than 40 diligent community volunteers. The Promenade Garden Conservancy was born.

With the focus and guidance of a professional gardener and some additional sweat labor from our volunteers the Promenade Garden has blossomed into a much-loved oasis for community members and tourists alike.
